Fibreglass front doors are produced in a similar way to the glass fibre reinforced polymers which are used for airplanes and surfboards, so they are incredibly durable, however they do have their drawbacks, as we explain here:
- They can lack the wow factor
Front doors should definitely add wow factor to a property or at least improve the kerb appeal, however, because styles of fibreglass door on the market are fairly limited you don’t have a lot of choice when it comes to design.
- You may have problems sizing them
The thing that makes fibreglass doors an attractive proposition – their resilience – is also a drawback. You may have a door opening that is not a standard size for example and in that case you will find it pretty much impossible to resize a fibreglass door.
- They can crack
Fibreglass can contract when it’s cold and this can cause cracks. Your fibreglass doors might not fall apart but their look will certainly downgrade the overall appearance of a property and may even let cold air into the house.
- You may have problems sizing them
The thing that makes fibreglass doors an attractive proposition – their toughness – is also a drawback. You may have a door opening that is not a standard size for example and in that case, you will find it pretty much impossible to resize a fibreglass door.
- They heat up
In summer fibreglass doors have a tendency to get hot. Imagine if your front entrance is soaking up the sun’s rays all day long. Fibreglass’s durability ensures that the changes in climate won’t make it warp like it would if it were made of wood, but the extreme exposure to temperature and climate changes over time causes fibreglass doors to become flat and unexciting in appearance.
- They scratch
Although fibreglass doors are incredibly resistant to the things that make other doors look tired and worn with use, they do have the potential to get scratched or dented, so you shouldn’t buy them believing that they are totally age-proof.
- Not as secure
Our front doors are designed to make us feel safe and protect us and our possessions and this is one area where the fibreglass door performs badly as they are actually easier to bust open than steel or wood doors.
- Cost more
Fibreglass doors can be more expensive than the average wood or steel door for example, so they may be out of your budget. And if you have no limits in terms of cost there are other more luxurious doors on the market that can give you security, longevity as well as the wow factor.
- Can affect your resale value
The most practical option isn’t always the most appealing when it comes to selling on. If that was the case, then probably everyone would drive a Volvo estate and live in a featureless new build. It’s just a fact that fibreglass, although durable will not add to the value of your home, simply because it just isn’t exciting as a material.
